called to be free

Missing Keys
Kristin Wallace

Do you ever search for misplaced keys? Before I discover the keys are missing, I am going about the task of getting ready at my normal pace, not knowing that something is wrong. I am preparing to leave when I start to get that sense of panic. Where did I last see the keys? I look in the usual places again to make sure I didn’t overlook them. I stop everything I am doing and start thinking about the keys. I walk around the house singly focused on finding them. I ask my family if they know where they are. But I can’t go anywhere until they are found and the longer the search takes, the more anxious I become. Finally I find them, usually in a small jacket pocket. The stress is instantly relieved and now I can go.

My search for the missing keys is like our search for God. At first we are going about life in a normal fashion, not knowing anything is missing. But somewhere on the journey, we discover that we’re not right with the Lord. The distractions of the world have lead us to a place of stagnancy. But it is not too late to seek the Lord. We need to seek Him passionately as if He was a ring of lost keys. This requires an action on our part to get up and do something. Singly focus on Him. We need to talk to God about how to actively seek Him. He will give us ideas on spending time in prayer and Bible study and how to fit it into our day. But don’t go any further down the path of life without Him. This is one search with a promise we will find what we’re looking for. Once we find Him again, the stress of life is instantly relieved and there is an unexplained joy in the journey!

Isaiah 55:6-7
Seek the LORD while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
Let him return to the LORD, and He will have mercy on him;
And to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.

Why do you call me Lord, Lord and don't do what I say?
By Greg Smith

Who is the Lord to you?  Jesus or yourself?  Do you decide what you want, and then ask Jesus to make it happen for you?  Isn't that making you the Lord and him your servant?

We all do this on occasion.  It is our "flesh" coming to the front again--to put our wants and desires first, and ask Jesus to bless them.  As Christians, we are called to turn that around.  To "crucify" ourselves and follow him.  Let's begin again and ask Jesus what he wants for our lives.  Let's read his words in scripture for guidance.  Let's consider how to apply them to our plans and our actions today and every day.  Let's make our faith not just what we say, but also what we do.

It's a tall order.  One we cannot accomplish by ourselves.  That is why Jesus sent us his Holy Spirit to indwell us and empower us to live the life he wants us to live. He will gladly give us his wisdom to know what to do if we humbly ask.  And he gives us the power to do it.  We can impact our world for our true Lord if we simply obey.

Jesus said, "Why do you call me Lord, Lord and don't do what I say?"

Why indeed.

There's nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus (2 Tim:3 The Message)
By the Apostle Paul written to Timothy (2 Tim3: The Message Version)

Don't be naive. There are difficult times ahead. As the end approaches, people are going to be self-absorbed, money-hungry, self-promoting, stuck-up, profane, contemptuous of parents, crude, coarse, dog-eat-dog, unbending, slanderers, impulsively wild, savage, cynical, treacherous, ruthless, bloated windbags, addicted to lust, and allergic to God. They'll make a show of religion, but behind the scenes they're animals. Stay clear of these people.

These are the kind of people who smooth-talk themselves into the homes of unstable and needy women and take advantage of them; women who, depressed by their sinfulness, take up with every new religious fad that calls itself "truth." They get exploited every time and never really learn. These men are like those old Egyptian frauds Jannes and Jambres, who challenged Moses. They were rejects from the faith, twisted in their thinking, defying truth itself. But nothing will come of these latest impostors. Everyone will see through them, just as people saw through that Egyptian hoax.

You've been a good apprentice to me, a part of my teaching, my manner of life, direction, faith, steadiness, love, patience, troubles, sufferings—suffering along with me in all the grief I had to put up with in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. And you also well know that God rescued me! Anyone who wants to live all out for Christ is in for a lot of trouble; there's no getting around it. Unscrupulous con men will continue to exploit the faith. They're as deceived as the people they lead astray. As long as they are out there, things can only get worse.

But don't let it faze you. Stick with what you learned and believed, sure of the integrity of your teachers—why, you took in the sacred Scriptures with your mother's milk! There's nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God's way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.
